BankAxept is the national payment system in Norway. Nine out of ten card payments with the Norwegian cards occurs with BankAxept. At the end of 2014 there were more than 7 million BankAxept cards in circulation, and in 2014 more than 1.4 billion transactions. The purpose of the establishment of BankAxept was originally to replace costly cash and check payments, using an efficient electronic service. Payment for goods and services and ATM withdrawals with high security through online checking accounts and the use of pincode. Security is further upgraded through the transition from magnetic stripe to chip. Previously, the brand and the system has been managed by FNO, on behalf of the banks. Now BankAxept is established as a separate company, owned directly by the banks. BankAxept are developing new payment solutions in new channels. This includes development of contactless payment for cards and mobile and online payment services.
